Tesla wants customers out of the charging station faster with a new fee

It can be expensive to "fill up completely" for the Americans.

With the new type of charging fee, it becomes a point to stop in time

Full charging stations are becoming an increasingly large problem, and Tesla has tried to solve the problem in various ways in the past. Now they have chosen to introduce a "rush hour fee" - this they call a congestion fee in English - at certain Supercharger stations in the USA, as a kind of answer to the problem.

This fee then takes over the role of today's idle fee , which only kicks in when the Supercharger station is at least half full and the car is no longer charging.

Makes it very expensive with "full tank"

Congestion fees, on the other hand, will start to run as soon as the car's battery passes a predetermined current level, which is currently set at 90 percent. When this happens, an extra dollar is added - that is, about one krona - per minute of charging.

The graph is a bit old, but it illustrates the point.

When a customer stops before the battery is full, the charging station simply gets a free space faster.

Only the US, at least for now

If you're the type who likes to fill it up completely at your local and quiet Supercharger station, you don't have much to fear for now. Firstly, Tesla only lists the US as the recipient of the new tax, and secondly, this will only apply to certain charging stations.

We do not know for sure exactly which Supercharger stations it is about, but we would guess that it will only apply to particularly popular and heavily trafficked thoroughfares.

Having said that, there is always a possibility that the tax will also find its way to charging stations in other countries as well.

We have tried to check with Tesla Norway, but unfortunately have not yet received a response to our inquiry.
