Meta's Threads Set to Hit European Markets, Report Says

Meta's social media platform, Threads, is set to launch in Europe in December, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The platform, initially seen as a competitor to Twitter, utilized Instagram as a base to simplify user registration. A recent update allows users to unsubscribe from Threads without deleting their entire Instagram account, a promise made by Adam Mosseri.
Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in October that Threads has nearly 100 million monthly active users, but a report based on Sensor Tower data indicates 73 million users worldwide. Despite this, Zuckerberg remains optimistic about reaching one billion users in the coming years.
The delayed European launch was a cautious approach by Meta to ensure compliance with the EU's stringent data protection laws. A recent strategy involves offering a paid subscription for Facebook and Instagram with an ad-free experience, though European legislators express skepticism.
Notably, European users will be able to access published Threads without a user account, distinguishing them from the rest of the world. While participation requires an active account, this approach may attract new users in the European Union, potentially reaching 40 million, according to analyst Debra Aho Williamson.
Threads' launch in Europe comes amidst challenges for other platforms, with brands pausing campaigns and Elon Musk expressing frustration with Twitter.
